Biden, of course, was referring not to the man Friedman, but to the policies Friedman espoused.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Interestingly, as an undergraduate\u00a0student\u00a0at Stanford University,\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s nominee for Federal Reserve Chairman, Kevin\u00a0Warsh,\u00a0was a research assistant for Friedman.\u00a0Warsh\u00a0readily proclaims\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoover.org\/research\/inflation-choice-kevin-warsh-fixing-federal-reserve\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Friedman<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0influenced his economic views<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Perhaps the most\u00a0essential\u00a0consideration\u00a0to come from Friedman\u00a0was\u00a0his\u00a0insight\u00a0that:\u00a0\u201cInflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Because the Federal Reserve \u201ccontrols\u201d the money supply, it has\u00a0the\u00a0exclusive\u00a0ability and responsibility\u00a0to control inflation.\u00a0Yet\u00a0the rest of the Federal government\u00a0almost\u00a0always has\u00a0an incentive\u00a0to encourage the Federal Reserve to\u00a0overextend the money supply.\u00a0On rare occasions,\u00a0such accommodations by the Federal Reserve\u00a0may be in order.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In\u00a0a\u00a0May 2025\u00a0interview,\u00a0Warsh gives\u00a0an example.\u00a0In late 2008,\u00a0the economy was arguably on the precipice of a major depression. Expansion of government spending\u00a0through increased borrowing\u00a0was\u00a0deemed\u00a0appropriate,\u00a0as was\u00a0the Federal Reserve\u00a0financing that borrowing by buying the bonds with newly printed money.\u00a0Warsh note\u00a0\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2ou6e5BAsKw\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Secretary Pollson was issuing bonds on Tuesday and Wednesday, and we&#8217;d buy them on Thursday and Friday,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but we said to ourselves,\u00a0when this crisis is over, we&#8217;re not going to do this stuff again.\u201d\u00a0Yet as he\u00a0explains,\u00a0they did\u00a0do it again.\u00a0He recognized this\u00a0enabled\u00a0ballooning deficits and debt,\u00a0and clearly generated\u00a0resurging inflation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Of course, President Trump has publicly hectored\u00a0the current Fed Chair to lower interest rates\u2014a policy that\u00a0also\u00a0clearly\u00a0risks expanding the money supply\u00a0inappropriately.\u00a0Trump\u2019s Justice Department has even launched a grand jury investigation\u00a0into Powell\u2019s Fed, an action we, and most everyone, view\u00a0as\u00a0reprehensible.\u00a0If confirmed,\u00a0will Walsh fold to\u00a0such\u00a0pressure from the White House?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Interestingly, in the same interview,\u00a0Warsh stated that:\u00a0\u201cCentral banks were created so that politicians would have someone to blame. None of this is new. I read breathlessly in the newspapers how mean these politicians are to the Central\u00a0Bank. Well, grow up. Be tough.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We hope this means no.\u00a0So maybe Milton Friedman will be running the show.
