This piece is titled Voices of the Rebellion. In this class, we talked in detail about various
\nkinds of protest music across several decades, and looked at many artists of many backgrounds
\nwho made songs protesting various grievances. I myself listen to lots of music that tends to stray
\ntowards the \u201cangrier\u201d side. Metal, rock, riot grrrl, punk, emo- some of my favorite genres fall
\nfirmly under the alternative subculture. Alternative music is rooted in political issues and a desire
\nfor social change, so topics like the ones we spoke of in class are brought up frequently.
\nHowever, music for reform doesn\u2019t have to be alternative- and that was shown quite clearly in
\nclass. I wanted to display that through a piece of art: artists of all backgrounds coming together
\nby a shared goal for justice.
\nThe artwork itself depicts several artists, as follows: Zack De La Rocha, lead singer of
\nRage Against the Machine (top left), Nina Simone (top right), Marvin Gaye (second row left),
\nBillie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day (second row right), Ado (third row left), Sam
\nCooke (third row right), Aretha Franklin (bottom left), and Seb Lowe (Bottom right). Each of
\nthese artists has made protest music in some way, and many represent differing genres. To make
\nthis piece, I used a digital painting software called Sketchbook, which is very similar to other
\npainting software such as Procreate or IbisPaint (except Sketchbook is free). The artwork was
\ncompletely hand-drawn on the software.<\/p>\n
