Team members gain valuable experience managing and analyzing big data in a supportive environment that values collegiality and collaboration. Emphasis is on research fundamentals<\/a> and career development (e.g., targeted skills development, networking, grantsmanship, teaching) in preparation for a competitive job market that increasingly values data science skills.<\/p>\n

If you are interested in joining the lab, then please check below for specific opportunities, or make a general inquiry. Unless otherwise specified, your initial email should include a brief introduction (who you are, your educational background, and why you are reaching out); how your interests, experience, and goals align with our research; a preferred start date (e.g., fall 20xx); and attachments containing a curriculum vitae and unofficial transcripts. Incorporate the phrase “We are all fish” somewhere in your initial email to indicate that you were paying attention :). We are particularly interested in people who have similar research interests, and either experience with or an eagerness to learn data science techniques that are applied through software tools such as ArcGIS<\/a> and R<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Undergraduate Opportunities<\/h2>\n

Undergrad researchers are valued members of the lab who are given projects and workloads that align with interests, abilities, availability, and goals. A lot of the work can be done on a connected laptop, so self-motivation and strong time-management skills are essential.

No funded positions at this time. Hard-working and reliable volunteers will be compensated through glowing reference letters and, when appropriate, co-authorship on publications.<\/span><\/p>\n

Graduate Opportunities<\/h2>\n

Graduate students are the heroes without which most academic research (and undergraduate teaching) would grind to a halt. Students are admitted through the Department of Biology’s MSc program<\/a>, or the interdisciplinary PhD in Environmental Sciences program<\/a>.
\n________________________________________________<\/p>\n

Multiple MSc and PhD positions <\/span><\/strong>are available to conduct exciting research that explores the use of online and mobile data in fisheries science, invasive species research, conservation, climate change, and human dimensions. Projects are collaborative and interdisciplinary, and range in scope from state to international. Our highest priority is to hire a PhD student to assess three sources of novel data for predicting the presence\/absence and spread of aquatic invasive species.
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Preferred candidates will hold at least one degree in a relevant discipline (must be MSc if applying for a PhD), be proficient in R and ArcGIS, have strong quantitative and writing skills, and be able to work both collaboratively and independently. Courses and other training are also available to develop these skills. Women and members of historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Post-doctoral Opportunities<\/h2>\n

Post-docs in our lab are junior colleagues who are mentored as needed, but are largely free to develop and manage their own projects, contribute to student training and research, and gain teaching and other experiences that are relevant to their chosen career path.

Collaborative Opportunities<\/h2>\n

Most of our research is enriched through collaborations with individuals, institutions, agencies, organizations, and industries. These collaborations bring complementary perspectives and expertise to bear on a research question, and are incredibly rewarding.

We want to develop a research proposal with a lab that has access to or can obtain historical samples of otoliths from commercially or recreationally important fishes (e.g., from sediment cores or middens).<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
